Externships offer you the opportunity to gain practical legal experiences under the mentorship of practicing attorneys, judges and policy experts. You work outside of the classroom locally, nationally, in Austin or Washington D.C., or around the world, with government entities, public interest organizations and courts.
The General Externship Program at Texas A&M School of Law offers our students the opportunity to earn academic credit for performing legal and law-related work outside of the classroom in approved legal settings, such as government entities, public interest organizations, corporate legal departments, law firms, and courts. Its mission: To provide practical, meaningful and substantive hands-on experience to complement and build upon a student’s classroom learning. Under the supervision and mentorship of attorneys or judges, students apply their academic learning to real world issues and cases, gaining valuable insight into the practice of law and the operations of legal institutions and thereby becoming better prepared for practice upon graduation.
The Residency Externship Program: Semester-in-Practice provides students the opportunity to apply classroom learning through a semester-long immersion experience in approved legal and law-related settings such as government, non-profit organizations, and in-house legal departments. This program affords students the opportunity to receive professional and practical experience while also serving their diverse geographical interests.
The Texas A&M School of Law Residency Externship Program in Public Policy lets students explore their potential, develop leadership skills, serve their community and country, and apply what they’ve learned in real-world settings in two of the country’s best cities, Washington, D.C. and Austin, Texas.
Professor Cecily Becker presented me with the perfect externship at a time that I wasn’t particularly looking. The externship aligned with my professional goals and allowed me to explore my interests through an untraditional lens, which helped me to further tailor my interests.
